  1. Hi all! Okay, I'm pretty good with Mac's, especially on the software side, but this one has me completely stumped. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch late 2012 model laptop running Mac OSX High Sierra, and while on a car ride one day it froze, and I was forced to hard restart it. However when I tried to turn it back on, I got the infamous flashing file of death. "Alright..." I thought "The SATA cable has slipped out of the hard drive again, no biggy right?" Well this has happened to me on a few occasions before, and each time it has been solved by taking the hard drive out, cleaning the SATA contacts, and then it has worked fine again. But when I did the same thing on this occasion it had no effect. The hard drive is still spinning and working because my other Mac can access the data fine using an external caddy, but I thought maybe it was just an issue with the drives boot capabilities, so I ordered a new SSD to go in it, as I had been meaning to do for a while now, however still, it could not detect my drive when I entered setup using a High Sierra USB boot disk that I made. It could detect USB just fine, but no SATA! Does anyone have any ideas? Because there are only 2 more things that I can think of that it might be. The first is that the proprietary SATA cable is faulty, which is a simple £15 - £20 fix... OR... The SATA controller on my motherboard has gone bad... Like I said, I usually know what I'm doing, and inbetween this story I have tried many things to try and get this to work, but to no avail! Please help, I can't afford a new computer 😭
  2. Well, I made a boo boo after building my PC.... I forgot to make partitions in my HDD .... So, my question is, Is there any way to do partitions now, I have a lot of data in the hard drive, so I am scared... Please do let me know...
  3. how to format hard drive

i have recently added another hard drive to my computer, as i connect it i realise that it still has windows on it. the files on it are corrupt. Is there a way to format the hard drive without deleting windows, using disk management on another copy of windows? thanks
  4. I ordered a 240GB SSD yesterday and plan on adding it to my current PC, which currently has a mostly full 750GB hard drive. I wanted to use the SSD for games, a boot drive, and for things that usually take longer to load, like Photoshop. All the tutorials I've found online just explain how to copy an entire hard drive to an SSD, but I don't want to do that, and can't do that. Any way I can selectively transfer Windows, my games, and other select programs on to my new drive? Thanks
  5. External harddrive recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for external hard drives. I've been looking at the WD My passport and Elements and also the Seagate expansion drives. They all seem to have quite a high percentage of bad reviews (on Amazon) about the drives failing etc, this makes me weary on getting either of them. I am looking for a size of about 2TB and the highest I'd like to go is around £70 Can anyone recommend a drive, even if it's one of the ones I've mentioned?
  6. What have i done to my PC?

My first post on here so apologies if im not posting in the right forum but... My PC was overheating and was coated in dust inside the case which covered most components so i bought some compressed air and cleaned the inside. I was holding a vacuum nearby where i was using the compressed air to suck up the dust but i must have got to close to something because upon turning back on my PC windows attempted start-up repairs and it took over an hour to fix disk repairs. After it did that windows kept doing the same thing and i was stuck in repair disk errors loop. The only screen i could get to was the windows recovery environment where you have all the options such as Reset PC, CMD, etc... i couldn't even reset this pc as that ran into errors also. Anyway i tried running many things through CMD and eventually i was able to log into windows 10 and view my desktop but it was VERY VERY slow. So i tried to re-install windows through booting from USB and CD but everything got worse, i could no longer boot windows or even boot from USB or CD. Eventually i was able to boot to USB after changing boot priority in the BIOS and moving HDD to the bottom of the boot list. Long story cut short, after many hours and errors i was able to reset pc using windows 8 disk and install windows 8. However it's still very slow to boot up windows but maybe about 10 minutes after it's on it seems fine but i can't access my user folder on windows like documents or downloads it says unreadable or corrupt but can access program files etc on same hard drive? Is it the hard drive causing these issues? Or is it something else? If you want any more details please just ask
  7. Im looking for a BIG USB 3.0 Hard drive for my XBox, after learning that my usb splitter couldn't actually power my 3 1tb HHD's and my 256g SSD, i just need a BIG fast HHD to plug in the back and forget about it.
  8. I've just upgraded my computer and wanted to feel the glorious advantages of the pc master race in it's full glory. But I've got a huge problem with one of my drives. I can't acces any of my files on the E: drive (HDD). There are 223 GB of data on the drive as of the properties of the drive If I check all the folders in the drive it says there are only 26GB on the drive. if I try to save those 26GB onto an external drive only 4GB are transfered without en error If I try to access and file an error message says that the file has been moved or renamed but I can see all the files executing .exe gives me the 0x0000006 error code chkdsk says the the file format is RAW and can therefor not check the drive i've formated the drive to ntfs before putting it into the new computer the drive is 0% fragmented the problems start occuring after trying to install a steam game and steam saying that there is a harddrive error but I was able to install steam games without a problem before that I would love to get some quick and useful help.
  9. So, I've got a new external hard Drive (Wd My Book 4tb), and I wanted to integrate it into my System (Windows 10 64/Bit), I´ve Formatted it to Ntfs Standard, Load some Data one it (All of My Media Content), disassembled it and put it into my System. First thing I noticed it took legit 30 mins to start up my Pc the first time... . So up in Windows, Bam nothing just a plain Drive Letter but not readable. So I checked it with the windows drive inspection, all fine. Then I looked into the partition manager and I saw This. Diskette 5, those 500Gb unformatted could be my Data. SO my Question now How can I bring the Hard Drive Back without losing my Data? I Already Backed the Partition Up to Diskette 9 (an External 8Tb Drive(But only the 500gb unformatted data)) You got any Ideas? Changing the Drive letter does nothing. Thanks in advance and sorry for my not Perfect English ^^.
  10. External HDD problems

Hi! (First time posting, so please excuse any mistakes) A while back, I purchased an external 2tb hard drive used off of Craigslist. The drive works fine when in the enclosure, and uses some wall converter to power itself, and a mini usb cable for data. I was interested in not having the drive in this enclosure, but inside of my pc, connected by sata. I disassembled the enclosure, and attached the drive with sata to my motherboard and power supply. However, when I start my pc, the drive starts beeping (can't hear any clicking though), and doesn't show up in windows or the bios. If i disconnect the sata cable, but not the power, the beeping stops until I put the cable back in. I would like to know if there is maybe an issue with my power supply, motherboard, or maybe the drive? 12. Ramcache

I just found out about RAMdisks after I saw the LTT video on Optane memory again and wanted some more (recent) information. Right now I think it's based on the same principle of Intel Optane, in that it uses super fast, low latency memory to cache files from a mechanical HDD. I have an SATA SSD and a mechanical HDD in my laptop and was wondering if I would see any difference if I used, for example, 2 gigs of RAM as RAM cache and if there are any dangers involved with this method. I'm also wondering if you guys know any good (free?) programs that can do this?
  13. The symptoms started about a week ago, where my 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD started going on the fritz. I noticed it when I tried running a game of League of Legends and suddenly a lot of my program icons were replaced with "Blank Page" Icons and when I'd try to run it, I received a little window asking me to browse for the file because it was not able to find it. I run my OS off an ssd, so my browsers and other light programs still run fine. I just can't get into any of my files in the hard drive, nor can I actually do anything to it. I've tried just about every trouble shooting article out there and I've decided to give in and ask my one beacon of hope before I just buy a new one. I don't have a LOT of stuff on the hard drive, but it would just be a pain in the ass to not be able to recover my files before dumping it, sentimental stuff. I'll post pics of all the error messages and weird shit I've seen since this started happening. I do want to note, that this pc I am using is made of 90% used parts, and I wouldn't be surprised if I am just experiencing hard drive failure due to wear and tear from the previous owner, who was a pc and gaming enthusiast. On the off chances that I could get my HDD to work, I noticed a HUGE blow to performance, certain parts of my games were being really glitchy and slow, my load times also took a massive cut once these problems started cropping up. In this image I left it mostly uncropped so you could see the files running off my SSD and the files running off my HDD. What the actual hell is going on and what can I do to salvage my data, since it's pretty clear I'm not gonna be able to get this hard drive back to running as normal.
  14. Hi everyone, I'm an art student doing mostly photography and I am currently looking for a good external hard drive to have a backup of all my work (no SSD as I won't be using this drive all the time), so what I am looking for is a reliable drive with at least 4To of storage. Knowing that I only work on macOS Sierra with one of these new Mac Book Pro 13", which product do you think will fit my needs the best ? Thanks for your help !
  15. Hard Drive not working

My hard drive has stopped working all of a sudden, it dosent spin and dosent show up in windows or in the BIOS, however I do have an SSD which is working fine, I have checked both sata cables to the psu and to the motherboard replaced the cables with spares and even use the ones I know are working for the SSD. I have even tried a brand new unused identical hard drive that my dad bought for his PC and that has the same issue. I have also tried things such as removing the SSD and having only the hard drive connected and putting my Kraken X62 sata plug onto a different cable and unplugging it all together, I have tried removing my graphics card and disconnecting my hue+. I have tried all the different sata and periferal slots on my PSU and all the sata slots on my Motherboard. My bios is also on the latest version My specs are X99A SLI plus Motherboard Gtx 1070 i7-6800k NZXT Kraken X62 AIO cooler NZXT Hue+ Samsung 250 evo SSD Seagate barracuda 2tb HDD Corsair RM750X PSU 4x4gb Corsair vengance 2400hz RAM EDIT: Forgot to mention I was swapping and installing parts when this happened, my Kraken my PSU and my hue plus are all new
  16. So i just finished the watercooling loop in my backup gaming pc and it worked great, i was even playing some BF1 but then i realized i hadnt plugged in my RAD fan so i was like oh thats no problem and shut down the pc and plugged in the fan. AND NOW all my sata ports are dead suddenly, refuses to pickup any hard drives. Ive tried different sata cables, different psu to run just the HDD, reseting the bios back to default and yeah to no f****ing avail. This is seriously annoying the shit outta me. One thing i did notice however is USB bootable devices still work as tested with my WIN 10 installer usb so my thinking and my question for you guys is: Can i get a sata controller add on card for either pci or pciex1that will still work even though the motherboard sata contoller is apparently dead. Mobo is an FM2A88M-HD+ paired with an A8 5600k and a GTX 480 on water.
  17. Hello everyone, I currently have a Windows 10 pc with one hard drive which is 2TB. Not long ago I found my old laptop hard drive 2.5" and decided to install it into my pc. So I did that, connected it to the SATA 3 port, hooked it up to power and boom it showed up on windows as a second hard drive. Ok, this is where it gets weird. I shut down my computer and when I turn it on again to see my pc (in windows) it doesn't show up? Windows basically is deciding when it see's the hard drive and when it doesn't. Or is it because not enough power is being supplied? I really don't know and would appreciate if anyone could help me out. Cheers,
  18. I just built a new gaming PC. The CPU, motherboard, PSU, and RAM are all new. I bought a second, Western Digital Blue 1TB HDD. Windows 10, and all of my other files, are installed on a different disk that I carried over from my first PC. I just wanted two disks. Well, Windows doesn't recognize the new Western Digital. If I go to Disk Management, the new 1TB disk shows up as Disk 0 with a black bar above it. It also says, "unallocated." If I right click on Disk 0, the options for New Spanned Volume and New Striped Volume are greyed out; I can't click on them. What I can click on is Convert to Dynamic Disk, Convert to MBR Disk, Properties, and Help. No other right click options are available. What do I need to do? If I need to provide additional information, please tell me what needs clarified. I'll do whatever I can to facilitate someone smarter than me solving this problem.
  19. "WD Blue"

I'm not that into computer building, I bought my (probably consisting of bad parts) pre-built PC for about $700, and the topic is on a 1 TB "WD Blue" Hard drive. I'm just here to ask, is 1 TB relevant today and is it useful?

  21. Should I keep my Hard Drive?

Okay, I'm currently building my first rig and I'm getting piece by piece. Today I got delivered my storage units. I got a 240GB Adata SSD to install Windows and all that quick stuff. For mass storage I was planning on getting a 3TB 7200 RPM drive. I got a mail from Newegg and bought a 4TB Seagate drive, however the order was processed in like 2 minutes, so it was too late for when I realised I didn't read the RPM speed and it wasn't listed anywhere (not Newegg, not Amazon, not even the Seagate spec sheet). I later found in articles and other local dealers that it was 5400 RPM. So I haven't taken the damn drive off the anti-static bag it came in, I've read that they're stupidly slow, but I have no idea if the reviewers were super picky or exaggerating. Should I try to sell it and get a 3TB 7200 RPM?
  22. Hey there, this is my first post on the forum so... that doesn't really mean anything. Anyway, I was wondering if it is possible to run one of my HDDs in my computer (which uses Windows Vista) on my PCIe GPU and have my second HDD (which uses Windows 10) running off of integrated graphics. The reason for this is that I am on a tight budget and got a Dell Optiplex 760 (for £50 from Facebook) and a Dell Optiplex 755 (for £0 from the rubbish) and was hoping to 'merge' the 2 systems into one. The reason for this is that my GPU (a Sapphire X1650 Pro (yes I like brackets (yes I know this is incorrect grammar))) supports Windows Vista but doesn't support Windows 10. Thank you for reading this, and hopefully we can figure this out.
  23. IDE HDD Adapter

Hi, Looking to get some data off of an old hard drive, so I'll need an IDE adapter... Not sure if i should get an IDE to SATA adapter or IDE to USB; here are my two options (they are the cheapest I could find in Australia) 1.https://fruugoaustralia.com/trixes-ide-to-sata-or-sata-to-ide-bi-directional-converter-adaptor-ata-100133/p-12693951-25960743?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgbGx0anm1wIVQYC9Ch0TQgFhEAkYAiABEgJwMfD_BwE 2.https://fruugoaustralia.com/digiflex-2535-sata-ide-to-usb-adapter-cable-for-hard-disk-hdd/p-12695079-25962253?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI--uQqKbm1wIVyBwrCh0PkgHHEAQYBSABEgKfcvD_BwE I'm thinking that the SATA adapter might allow a faster file transfer over the USB? or am I mistaken... Please let me know which one is the best option... Also, in regards to the first adapter, I'm confused about the molex cable / port (on the adapter) provided, what is this used for? as IDE drives require a female molex for power, I don't understand what this one's for... Thanks in advance!
  24. I am considering building a server/NAS sort of thing but I'm on a tight budget. I am looking to use 4x2TB hard drives, but I don't know which kind to get. WD has Desktop drives for $60, Surveillance drives for $74, and NAS hard drives for close to $90. All of the data will be backed up, obviously. Which drive would be the best for my scenario?
  25. Hi guys! Firstly, I'm not sure if these kinds of posts are entertained here so pardon me if not. I've been enduring PUBG stuttering for a while now, I've recently upgraded my CPU since I thought it was the Pentium slowing it down and solely responsible for the stutter. But still when I replaced it I'm still getting this issue especially during combat and highly populated areas I've been monitoring CPU/GPU usage after I die and notice gpu usage isn't as stable, I know my GPU doesn't really comply to minimum requirements posted but I think it should not be stuttering this bad. I also applied overclock to it (+150/+300) So is it possible that it's the hard drive causing this issue? Here's the pic of GPU USAGE during in game: https://imgur.com/a/MnEJGYg Specs: i5-4460 Palit Geforce GTX 750 OC 8gb DDR3 HyperX Fury @1600mhz 1TB 7.2k RPM HDD 107GB free
