  2. Hi, I've been looking for a college laptop for a while now and although I seem to have a general picture of my picks, I am still a bit puzzled about specific configurations. I would really appreciate if you guys helped me. I would like to use this laptop mostly for school work (Microsoft Office), watching Netflix, YouTube and I definitely want it to be fast. Sometimes I also do some work with Adobe InDesign. Number 1 on my list so far: HP 250 - Intel Pentium N4200, 8GB of RAM, Intel HD 505 Graphics, 128GB SSD and a 1366 x 768 display. It's possible to have a different configuration with this laptop, for example with a worse Celeron N3060 CPU, but also a better 1920 x 1080p display. I don't really know which parts of my laptop I will use the most, but I need to close my budget at around 450$ (the HP on my list is 470$ in my country) Could you tell me on what parts I should focus the most? Also, will I notice the difference in better parts during those tasks that I mentioned? Are there any other models in that price range that are worth looking at? Or is it not worth spending that much for school work only and it's better to buy for example ASUS Vivobook, which costs a bit less? Cheers
  3. Haywire touchscreen 'broke; laptop

Hi, My sister dropped her laptop a few months ago and the touchscreen broke so it's been disabled. I updated WIndows and it got past most of them but when it came to the lock screen, the touchscreen enabled itself and it locked me out. So I restarted the laptop using the button and now it comes up with the "Windows could not be installed. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.". I can't get past it because of the touchscreen. WHat do I do?
  4. A security researcher has discovered a flaw in the keyboard driver used on HP laptops. The flaw contains a keylogger, when the function is enabled, allows a attackers to record the users keystrokes. HP has released a driver update for all of the affected laptops. What's interesting is based on personal experience, the driver update is the exact same as the one they provided back in October. Not sure if the old one also has the keylogging registry removed or not. But looks like it did because when trying to search for those entries, it shows no results. For those with a HP laptops, then download the file and apply the update. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05827409 https://bleepingcomputer.com/news/hardware/keylogger-found-in-hp-notebook-keyboard-driver/
  5. Hello Friends. I had Hp Probook 450 G4 i5 7200U mother board is HP 8231. I installed Adata SU800 128GB ssd which works fine it is very fast but issue is cpu usage is very high 40% to 50% all the time even when idle. In windows task manager ntoskrnl.exe is using this cpu %age. All the drivers are updated. After a lot of research i found nothing about ntoskrnl.exe. Every body says its a driver issue so i updated all the driver to latest version, but the problem still exist. I found the root of the problem though. When i remove ssd from my laptop cpu usage comes to normal less than 5%. But when i plug it in cpu useage rises making laptop to heat up and consume more battery. ssd is detected and working fine than i dont understand what the problem is. Do i need some driver or what i dont understand.. please help me fix this.
  6. Hello Guys, So I am using a hp Z400 Workstation, it has an internal speaker + front and rear 3.5mm jacks for mic and headphones It has been working all fine the internal speakers would work if I am not plugging any speakers and when I plug a speaker it automatically switch to it, was great days. But for 2 days now, only the internal speakers work whether I am plugging the headphones on from or back jacks and even microphone doesn't work ( it worked before fine ) on the same OS and everything I installed realtek drivers and Realtek HD audio to monitor the speaker it doesn't show any plugged devices and no yellow folder icon that was offered as a solution before So any Ideas what do I have to do to make it work again
  7. So, I'm having a HP 17-f256ng here that, when turned on, powers up, screen stays black, no backlight. After a few seconds a led on the TAB key starts flashing (on-off) and the following beep code is played: 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 That's 2 beeps, pause, 2 beeps... and so on. 5 times. I can't find the meaning. Google provides me with several forum entrys and lists all of which (except on on toms hardware) refere to another problem or code entirely. HP Support is totally useless. Toms Hardware which had the exact same issue however was a desktop system with a faulty PSU. Which is, apart from memory (beep code) the only lead I have. PSU in this case charges the battery fine and with or without battery makes no difference. So, if that is it, the motherboard power circuitry but I kinda doubt that. For memory, this thing is a cat-ass-trophy to take appart. But if I remove the 1 DIMM module, it's 3 beeps and done. No memory. I don't have a spare lying around for laptop so testing is not really an option and there are no shops around. Any of you know this problem? I take anything

  10. so i got my hands on an HP Omen 15 (2014) for really cheap (250$), after replacing the thermal paste i noticed it has NO other option for storatge Aside for an M.2 Slot wich houses a 256GB Sandisk SATA SSD, my question here is if it allows NVME Drives, or im stuck with SATA speeds m.2 i only want storage mainly as 256gb only on a Gaming laptop is pain as i also use it for college, i couldnt find any documentation as it only pops for the newer omens as all of them have the same name, and on the webpage i only found "ssd m.2 supported" but nothing else,

  13. So I just got a laptop, fairly old I believe, the HP Envy 15-j100ni and I am trying to get it to run games such as overwatch, but whenever I do it drops down to less than 10fps consistently. Even on my "craptop" (3rd gen i3 and intel integrated graphics 4000) I would get more than that on minimum settings, where as my new system, with an i7-4700MQ @2.4GHz and the NVidia GeForce 840m even though I have all the latest drivers etc. Any tips or troubleshooting I can do to make it work as I believe it should as seen elswhere online?
  14. I'm sure this question get's asked a lot so i'll keep this quick. I'm hunting for a laptop before the holiday season with at least a 6700hq and gtx 1050 (as much vram as possible) with an ips display (or aftermarket ips upgrade option) for under $800 (asking for a lot honestly) i'm considering a Dell 7577 but the display is a dealbreaker. any recommendations? https://amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i5577-5328BLK-PUS-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B06XFG7157/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1511578011&sr=1-3&keywords=gtx+1050+laptop (I want to stick to reputable companies, Dell, HP, LG, Asus, etc) (upgrading from a latitude E4310, buisness class laptops are pathetic...)

  19. Server Build

Hey all, I'm planning on building a new computer for personal use using old server gear (LGA2011), but I have a few questions. I want to use an HP Z420 gen 1 but a version2 E5-2680v2 CPU. Is that possible? Also, Is HPs Z420 board standard ATX Size or no? Can I update the bios to get the chip to work? Finally, any suggestions on commercial used systems (i.e. Dell T3600)?

  21. A screenshot of a HP care package, has been leaked showing their one of their laptops to be running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 ARM based processor. The processor runs at 2.45GHz with 8 cores / 8 thread, built on the 10nm process, and other features like WiPower, Neural Processing Engine, and 802.11AD. The specific HP laptop model is the 2US29AV, where it will come in 2 configurations. 22. Recently at work, we had gotten an HP Omni 27 to repair, however my employer decided that it was not worth attempting to repair it, since the owners were not fussed about whether it actually gets repaired or not (another technician told them that it was not worth the effort, and my employer had verified this after checking the motherboard). Since we are going to build them a new PC (I know, old parts, however we have a source for original 1155 boards (as in, not 2nd hand)) with the CPU and hard drive from the HP Omni, and my employer may let me take the Omni home (sans DVD drive and ram, and of course, CPU and HDD), so I am hoping to replace the monitor's control board with one that includes VGA and DVI (in addition to HDMI and 3.5mm sound inputs - Beats technology is a non-issue, as I am perfectly fine with standard audio, despite being a pianist), and hopefully also DisplayPort (although I don't think that it is likely that I'll find a controller board with DP) . The only problem, is that the monitor is slightly cracked at the top (the owners claim that the monitor itself is fine), enough for me to be afraid of destroying it should I take it out, so I was hoping if anyone can help me find the serial number of the HP Omni 27's screen (or numbers, should there be more than one possible screen that was meant for the HP Omni 27) so I could search for a matching controller board.
  23. Recently, my PC (hp prebuilt) has been extremely loud, even at idle(11% cpu usage). It is less than a year old and was dead silent when I got it. I thought there might be too much dust, so I looked, and there was none. My CPU and GPU temps are pretty low (see screenshot). It is getting difficult to concentrate with such loud fans at this point. Can someone guide me in the right direction. Do I need new fans? Is this a bios problem? New heat sink? Any help is tremendously appreciated Thanks
  24. From HP's site. Specs has been updated and it supports up to 16GB of ram, not 8GB from the info we've heard not too long ago. There isn't much that can be changed in term of components, just your OS and storage drives. Screen is limited to 1080P, no option for 4K, but you can opt for Windows 10 Pro for a extra charge. Ship date is November 23, 2017. Stock configuration starts out at $735 USD. http://store.hp.com/us/en/ConfigureView?catalogId=10051&langId=-1&storeId=10151&urlLangId=&catEntryId=3074457345618626318&quantity=1
  25. This is a project that me and my brother have been working on since August. He was in need of a new computer and he wanted something that was unique looking so we decided that we wanted to do a case mod. I had this old HP Compac DX2300 just laying in my room and I had no real plans for it so I asked if he wanted to use the case and he said that he liked the look of it so we decided that we were going to use it. We thought about some ideas and we decided that the case should have a side panel window, be painted black on the inside and the rear and we hade to figure out a better airflow solution since the case only had a rear 92mm fan mount originally. (We don't have all of the components yet, that is why there are non installed in the case. We are thinking of going with Ryzen since it has good price to performance.) I looked at the front of the case and thought that we maybe could mount a 120mm or 140mm fan in the front to solve the airflow problem. I took some mesurements and it looked like it would fit, but we needed to cut away the grille and some of the surrounding panel to make space for a new panel that we could attach to the case and then mount a fan to it. So I started by removing the grille with a Dremel and after that I sketched out roughly where we hade to cut to make space for the new panel. We used metal shears to cut the panel. Then we made a panel from sheet metal that fit in the front of the case and mounted it with some rivets. we used rivets in stead of screws to make it look more factory. I made some mesurements to see what size fan we could fit and it turned out that 120mm was the largest that would fit. So we used a hole saw to make the hole for the fan and drilled 4 screw holes around it that we used to mount the it. I hade some rubber vibration dampers that I got from my 200R case so we put those in the screw holes to get rid of some of the vibrations from the fan. We test mounted a fan to see how it all would fit. It looked good so we got to work on the side panel window. We measured and sketched out where the acrylic would fit the best and then we cut the panel with the metal shears. I then put some rubber trim around the edge to make it look a bit nicer and then attached the acrylic with some double sided foam tape. It turned out that we hade to modify the front panel connectors becasue they were going to be in the way of the fan otherwise. I cut awas as much of the plastic as I could and then used a hot glue gun to seal and protect the cables. I had cut away the mount for the FPCs when earlier so I just glued them to the front panel. I drilled a hole beside the fan so that the cables could enter the case. Because this is a HP case, it was designed for a specific motherboard and that means that you can not remove the I/O shield. So I used my Dremel to cut it away so that we could fit another one insead. It took it's time but in the end it worked out great. I test fitted an old mobo and a I/O shield (wich was not the correct one but it worked for testing). Those were the major things that had to be done before I could paint the case. I masked of the things that I did not want to paint and painted the rest with a black semi gloss spray paint. I am not the best at painting but I think that it it looks decent. The inside was a bit hardes since there is less space and more nooks and cranys that had to be painted. (Sorry for dark pics) So here we are then, a few months later we have a unique case that nobody else has. Mission acomplished It was a fun and educative project that I learned alot from Thanks for reading and I would like to hear what you think about it in the comments!
